Ginger Greenhouse

Flagship Project

Ginger Greenhouse

Bright Expression LDA’s flagship Ginger Greenhouse Project represents our commitment to high-value, climate-smart agriculture. Set across 100 acres in Messejana, Aljustrel (Beja Region), the project benefits from Portugal’s fertile soil, Mediterranean climate, and supportive CAP 2023–2027 framework. With abundant sunlight, efficient water systems, and close access to major European trade routes, this location provides the ideal environment for producing premium young ginger at scale.

Why Portugal

Bright Expression LDA follows an integrated farming model where livestock waste enriches crops and crop by-products feed animals, creating a circular resource system that minimizes operational waste. This approach boosts productivity while ensuring eco-efficiency, maintaining ecological balance, and supporting sustainable agricultural practices.

Bright Expression LDA’s smart greenhouse design integrates climate sensors, drip irrigation, and automated ventilation to ensure efficient and consistent yields. Powered by solar energy, these systems enhance energy efficiency, reduce operational costs, and support our sustainability and carbon-reduction goals.

EU Market Access

Portugal’s alignment with the European Green Deal and the CAP 2023–2027 supports projects that adopt greenhouse farming, renewable energy, and efficient irrigation, opening access to EU and national funding.

EU Ginger Market Overview

The European Union is one of the fastest-growing markets for ginger, with demand increasing steadily due to its culinary versatility, health benefits, and role in natural remedies. According to EU trade reports, ginger imports have grown by over 30% in the last five years, with the Netherlands, Germany, and the United Kingdom acting as major entry points and distribution hubs. The COVID-19 pandemic further boosted demand, as consumers turned to ginger for its immune-boosting properties, and this trend has remained strong.
Currently, more than 90% of the EU’s ginger supply is imported, primarily from China, Peru, Brazil, and Thailand. However, European buyers are increasingly seeking closer, fresher, and sustainably grown alternatives, especially for fresh young ginger. Local EU production is still minimal, meaning Portugal has a strong opportunity to position itself as a reliable supplier within the common market. Being within the EU allows producers in Portugal to offer shorter transport times, reduced logistics costs, and lower carbon footprints compared to imports from Asia or South America.
Price levels vary depending on quality, freshness, and origin. Imported mature ginger typically retails at €2.50–€4.00 per kilogram, while fresh young ginger can command €8.00–€12.00 per kilogram in European supermarkets and specialty outlets. Organic and sustainably certified ginger fetches even higher premiums. This price structure makes greenhouse-grown ginger in Portugal particularly attractive, as it can compete on freshness and quality rather than volume alone.

In summary

the EU ginger market is expanding, with strong consumer demand and a supply gap for fresh, sustainably produced ginger. By investing in greenhouse ginger production, Portugal—through initiatives like Bright Expression, LDA—has the potential to capture a share of this high-value market, supplying not only the domestic sector but also premium markets across Europe.

Benefits & Advantages
of Ginger Greenhouse Farming

Diversification Model -
What We Grow

The agricultural production centers on fresh young ginger as the primary high-value crop, grown year-round in greenhouses for
the European culinary and wellness markets. This is complemented by a strong focus on almond farming, utilizing the local
climate to produce nuts for the food and health industries.

The operation also yields a diverse array of vegetables to ensure a steady food supply. This includes high-demand staples like
potatoes, onions, garlic, and carrots, alongside fresh salad ingredients such as tomatoes, lettuces, peppers, cucumbers, and
brassicas like broccoli and cabbage. Beyond plant-based foods, the farm produces animal proteins through cattle, goat, and
poultry livestock, as well as fish harvested from sustainable aquaculture systems.
